All-rounder JJ Smit has been appointed interim captain of the FNB Eagles ahead of a pivotal home ODI series against Oman national cricket team and Scotland national cricket team.
The series forms part of the ICC Cricket World Cup pathway and is set to take place in Windhoek from 2–12 April.
In preparation for the tournament, the Eagles are hosting the Uganda national cricket team in a five-match series comprising three T20s and two 50-over matches, providing valuable match readiness ahead of the ODI fixtures.
Smit, who has been serving as vice-captain, steps into the leadership role while long-standing captain Gerhard Erasmus takes a break from captaincy duties. Erasmus has led Namibia for over six years, a period marked by unprecedented success, including qualification for four consecutive ICC Men’s T20 World Cups.
Speaking on his decision, Erasmus said:
“I just want to go out there and enjoy my cricket, and I hope this rest can unlock my highest potential. My tactical input will still be available, and I’ll be there to support the team.”
